Lamenting the Past I Cannot Change

Some of the stories from our lives are too painful to forget, and too heavy to keep carrying.

"My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge." ~ Psalm 62

God, I don't want to replay my story anymore.

Not because it didn't matter. Not because the wounds weren't real. Not because I wasn't hurt. But because it's become too heavy to carry.

I've spent years revisiting old conversations, replaying disappointments, and trying to explain why certain things impacted me so deeply. I wanted understanding. I wanted acknowledgment. I wanted my pain to be recognized and my feelings to be validated.

Those desires weren't wrong.

But I've grown weary of building my case.

I've clung to parts of my story because I believed they defined me. I've worn them like a heavy coat, believing that without them, I might somehow disappear. I've told and retold certain chapters because they helped explain who I am. And they helped me make sense of why.

But my story is deeper than the events and experiences that happened to me.

The betrayals mattered.

The losses mattered.

The wounds mattered.

But they aren't the whole story.

Neither are my accomplishments, my beliefs, my heritage, or the labels I wear. Those things have shaped me too, but they don't fully define me.

There are thoughts and prayers no one else has heard.

There are forgotten and unseen acts of kindness.

There are moments of courage no one witnessed.

There are countless ways my life has been shaped by things outside my awareness. Conversations I've forgotten. People I will never know. Ancestors whose lives touched mine before I was born.

And there are parts of my story that have escaped me entirely.

Only God sees all of it.

Only God knows how every thread connects.

And maybe that's why clinging to one chapter of any story is to tell less than the whole truth.

I'm more than what happened to me.

I'm more than what others have said about me.

I'm more than my accomplishments and my regrets.

In some ways, I'm a mystery, known fully by God alone.

I'm tired of using my story to prove that my feelings are justifiable.

They are.

God understands.

He knows what was done to me and what I've done to others. He knows my motives, my fears, my pride, my anger, and my regrets. Nothing is hidden from Him.

And somehow, He still loves me.

Not because I've earned it.

Not because I've gotten everything right.

But because mercy has never been something I deserved. It's something He freely gives.

Believe me, my hypocrisy isn't lost on me.

For every grievance I've brought against someone, there's likely a similar grievance they could bring against me.

I know I've hurt people.

Some failures I remember with regret. Others have slipped past me.

That awareness is humbling.

It reminds me that I stand before God not merely as someone who has been wounded, but as someone who has wounded others.

Lord, have mercy on me because I desperately need it.

Lord, show me grace.

Look beyond my worst moments and see all of me.

I know if this is what I hope for myself, I cannot withhold it from others.

I can't change the past.

I can't unsay words spoken in anger.

I can't force repentance.

I can't rewrite childhood.

I can't heal relationships by myself.

I can't undo wounds inflicted by others. And I can't undo wounds I've inflicted.

The past is fixed and has been written.

But the present and the future haven’t.

Perhaps that's where hope lives.

Not in changing the past, but in entrusting it to the only One who understands it completely.

I can't make people understand what they don't want to understand.

I can't make reconciliation happen.

I can't argue my way to peace.

But I can surrender.

I can stop demanding that others validate what God already knows.

I can loosen my grip on the scales of justice and entrust them to the One who judges rightly.

I'm tired.

I don't want to spend the years I have left arguing with a history that can't answer back.

I want peace more than vindication, mercy more than scorekeeping, grace more than being right.

I want to notice God's goodness instead of constantly measuring old disappointments. I want to love the people He's placed in front of me. I want to enjoy the life I have instead of mourning what I wish I'd had.

Lord, if I try to retell my sad story again tomorrow, please remind me that I've already placed it in Your hands.

Remind me that I don't have to be my own advocate.

Remind me that justice belongs to You.

Remind me that mercy belongs to You.

And remind me that my story is still being written.

Because I’m no longer willing to sacrifice my peace for a past I cannot change.

Lord, I lay my story at Your feet, trusting You to redeem it.
